The Trail of Tears

The Trail of Tears was an awful time in history for the Native Americans. The US government moved them from their homelands in the mountain valleys of Appalachian Georgia and the Carolinas to western Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma.
The exact number of all the Native Americans is unknown, but we know for sure that there was a lot. In 1830 is when it all happened. President Andrew Jackson signed for the Indian Removal Act. One of the main reasons it happened was because a lot of the white Americans were farmers, and they wanted all of the Native Americans off of there farming land.
The Treaty was not signed at first, but Andrew Jackson kept fighting with them until it finally passed. The United States Army then found out about the removal of the Cherokees and rounded some up to put them in stockades. Then they went on the Trail of Tears. I saw a lot of things on this trip and none of them were good.
Many Native Americans died over this very long trip. There was estimated to be thousands and thousands dead. They all died of many diseases and of starvation. When we was on this trail, we encountered many awful weather conditions. We also ran out of food and water a lot of times, and didn’t have proper clothing throughout the time.
Over all I thought this was a terrible thing. They shouldn’t have made the Native Americans move like that. So many people died over this and others got so much diseases it was unreal. That was why this awful trip was called “The Trail of Tears”.
